Giacinto Scelsi remains one of the musical mysteries of the 20th century: concentration on the microscopic life of sound, philosophy of listening, and the One. Solitary ascetic, Scelsi remained at a distance from the modernity of the 1950s, but marked an entire generation of spectral composers, that of Tristan Murail and Michaël Levinas. The cellist Frances-Marie Uitti peforms her version of the Trilogy she created in Comes: Les Trois Âges de l’Homme. Triphon is the time of youth, of the explosion of a filtered, hoarse, and rustling sound. In Diathome maturity mirrors thought while Igghur—in which the score features a stave for each string—focuses on the heart of a single sound.
