Spectralism has had important ramifications outside of France. In Italy, Fausto Romitelli carried out a unique hybridization between the psychedelic horizon of rock and the conceptual rigor of his composition. Kaija Saariaho, born in Finland, forged her “timbral axe” by including harmonic and formal organization. Fitting squarely in the experimental American movement, James Tenney’s music focuses the listener’s attention on a continual phenomenon over a dilated time span—his work is at home in an unconventional setting like the Forum at the Centre Pompdiou. The premiere presented in this concert, that of the Iranian composer Sina Fallahzadeh, is inspired by the myth of Gilgamesh. Vocal metamorphosis, morphing is at the heart of Metanoïa: a search for an imaginary archaic language in a unified form.
