Composition Workshops

The composition workshops are an opportunity for young composers to examine specific themes defined by the academy’s guest composers. Throughout the work sessions and rehearsals with the artists and performers, the young composers will be able to glean knowledge from the experience and advice of their instructors in order to produce a new work.

Five young composers are invited to write a short sketch for orchestra. After a work session with the composer Kaija Saariaho and the conductor Marc Desmons, these sketches will be read by the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France. At the end of these sessions, Carmine Emanuele Cella (composer and researcher, recently named Assistant Professor at CNMAT Berkeley) will open other perspective to the participants by showing the possibilities available with the orchestration software developed at IRCAM. Each participant will have a private appointment with Carmine Emanuele Cella during which they can take advantage of his expertise and see how to use the software.

Selected Composers: Katherine Balch (United States), Hunter Coblentz (Canada), Quentin Lauvray (France/United States), Lucy McKnight (United States), Aida Shirazi (Iran).

WORKSHOP FOR Conducted Ensemble and Chamber Music

In 2018, IRCAM wanted a large number of young composers to take advantage of the exceptional environment offered by the ManiFeste academy during the month of June (internationally renowned composers, exceptional musicians, researchers specialized in musical fields, etc.). The first year, these young composers took individual and group classes, took part in encounters, discussions, and started to work on compositional sketches with the teaching composer, Stefano Gervasoni and Marko Nikodijevic, and the musicians from the Ensemble intercontemporain. 12 of these composers were selected to return to the academy in 2019 with their completed piece that will be rehearsed and performed by the Ensemble intercontemporain.

Selected Composers for the Conducted Ensemble: Jaehyuck Choi (South Korea), Francesco Ciurlo (Italy), Simone Corti* (Italy), Jug Marković (Serbia), Benjamin Scheuer (Germany), Francisco Uberto (Argentina).

Selected Composers for the Chamber Music: Gerardo Gozzi* (Italy), Matteo Gualandi (Italy), Joshua Hey (United States), Kevin Michael Kay (United States), Nicholas Morrish (United Kingdom), Nicolas Roulive (Belgium).

workshop for Chamber Music and Electronics

IRCAM offers 10 young composers a two-week period during which they will have a series of composition classes on mixed music, instrumental classes given by musicians, one-on-one meetings  with the composer leading the workshop, Raphaël Cendo and the academy’s guest composers, and work sessions on their sketches with musicians of the Ensemble Nikel. They will also have individual meetings with IRCAM’s computer music designers to fine-tune the electronic part of their work. There will not be any rehearsals with the musicians during this first session.

At the end of this two-week session, some of the young composers will be selected to complete their score (5-10 minutes) during the 2019-2020 year. They will return in 2020, from June 15—27, to rehearse their works performed in concert during the ManiFeste-2020 academy.

Selected Composers: Konstantinos Baras (Greece), Giulia Lorusso* (Italia), Claudio Panariello (Italia),  João Carlos Pinto (Portugal), Demian Rudel Rey (Argentina), Zeynep Toraman (Turkey), Chaz Underriner (United States), Erika Vega (Mexico), Yulan Yu (China), Jacques  Zafra* (Mexico).
